Tamil actor and politician Vijay has declared that all his public meetings are cancelled in the next two weeks, with a chance that they could be rescheduled in the future. His political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), posted it as an official post on X.
TVK said in a statement that it was much saddened by the recent tragic incident in Karur, where a stampede during one of Vijay’s rallies led to the loss of 41 lives. The party wrote, “We are in pain and sorrow because of the loss of our loved ones… We tell you that, once the permission of our party leader has been obtained, new information will be given to us about these public meetings.”
The cancellation follows the ongoing questioning of the Karur incident. Three of the party leaders are being sued in relation to the stampede, but Vijay has denied having done anything wrong himself or his party, and has pointed out that there were safety controls in place to handle the crowd. The tragedy has generated a lot of debate regarding the management of the rally and the safety of the people in case of political events in Tamil Nadu.
Vijay is a political leader as well as a film star, and he has a huge following, which has continued to draw massive crowds to his rallies. The Karur incident has, however, made him and his party cautious in the immediate aftermath. The police are still investigating the events that led to the stampede, such as the state of crowd control and logistics at the venue.
Although the cancellation of the public meetings is provisional, it is an indication of the sensitivity of TVK towards the tragedy and respect for the families of the victims. The fans of the actor-politician have shown outrage over the incident, as well as a sense of gratitude over the responsible action of Vijay in discontinuing the public events until further notice.
