On Tuesday, India welcomed the US President Donald Trump’s action in releasing a 20-point plan to end the Israel-Hamas conflict, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi terming the initiative as a practical window to long-term peace and development of the population of both Palestinians and Israelis. It was announced a day after Trump released the detailed proposal at a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.

The plan involves the immediate release of all hostages held by Hamas alive or dead within 72 hours after the ceasefire, as well as the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces. Military operations would be suspended, and battle lines frozen until terms are obtained for a complete and orderly withdrawal. After releasing hostages, Israel would also release 250 Palestinian prisoners who were sentenced to life imprisonment and 1,700 Gazans who were captured since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023.

Amnesty would be given to Hamas members who were ready to denounce violence and agree to peaceful coexistence, and safe passage would be offered to those who would like to escape Gaza. It also foresees the creation of a new city, called New Gaza, and a transitional governmental system managed by a supposedly apolitical and technocratic committee of Palestinians and international experts under a Board of Peace, the chair of which will be Trump, with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair as a member. The UN and other related agencies would provide full humanitarian aid, which would ensure continuous assistance to Gaza.

India has continuously preached dialogue and diplomacy as a way of ending hostilities and promoting a two-state solution. In the statement, Modi rejoiced in the plan by Trump, noting that it provides a viable model of peace, security, and development to the Palestinians, Israelis, and the West Asian region at large. He encouraged all the stakeholders to unite to support the initiative and assist in a peaceful solution.
