Based on the allegations of organised financial crimes, money laundering, and benami assets, Assam Police has started a new probe against event manager Shyamkanu Mahanta, who is one of the accused in the death case of singer Zubeen Garg. According to official documents, it is a different probe to the one under investigation regarding the death of Garg.

Mahanta belongs to a respected family: His brothers are former Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and Gauhati University Vice Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta, but was raided by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on two days. In the process of the search, police found a big amount of possibly incriminating evidence.

Seized Items and Findings

The raids made upon the home of Mahanta revealed:

  • Several PAN cards with the name of one firm.
  • Almost 30 stamp seals of the company and official stamp seals.
  • Documents associated with a number of benami and shell properties.

CID officials reckon that these materials can point to a huge chain of fraudulent activities of property acquisition, and illegal financial transactions.

FIR and Legal Action

After the seizures, an extended FIR was registered by Senior SP Ashif Ahmed on behalf of the CID, where he demanded:

  • Another probe of Mahanta financial transactions.
  • Freezing and attachment of his movable and immovable property.

According to this complaint, the CID headquarters filed a new case late at night on Saturday under various provision of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Additional SP Moramee Das has been given the responsibility of the investigating officer.

He was the main organiser of the Northeast India festival in Singapore in which Garg was to perform. Others under investigation are the manager of the singer, Siddharth Sharma among other ten.
