Karnataka Rains: Incessant downpours and overflowing rivers, particularly the Bhima, have dramatically upset normal day-to-day activities and wreaked havoc in a large number of districts in the Kalyana Karnataka region, as officials verified on Saturday. Destruction of property, damage to infrastructure, and displacement of the residents have been recorded in such districts as Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Bidar, Vijayapura, Raichur, and Koppal.

In Mahalingapara town, Bagalkote district, a tragic accident was reported where an 11-year-old boy, Darshan Nagpa Lathura, was killed after part of his house caved in late on Friday night as a result of heavy rainfall. The officials said that his brother, who was injured in the same incident, is in the treatment process.

Flooding in the rural areas has also been reported to cause losses of livestock. Evacuation of the inhabitants to higher areas is being done by rescue teams in the low-lying areas and the river banks as the rising rivers overtop the homes.

A number of roads and bridges have been washed away or submerged, and this has greatly affected transportation and the movement of emergency personnel. Several houses have either been swept away or waterlogged, and this has led to the families being displaced to temporary shelters.

The agricultural sector has been severely affected, where big pieces of farmland submerged. Farm produce like pulses, grapes, sugarcane, cotton, and other seasonal crops has been badly affected, and farmers are threatened with substantial financial losses. Officials reported that the water levels of the Bhima River have risen due to the discharge of 3.50 lakh cusecs of water contributed by dams in Maharashtra, making the situation worse in Karnataka downstream.

The seriousness of the crisis was underscored by the in-charge Minister of the Kalaburagi district, Priyank Kharge, who made a visit to the flood-afflicted areas. Unremitting rains and swollen rivers in Maharashtra and Karnataka have inflicted a lot of suffering on 36 villages in Kalaburagi. The security of our people is our first priority, he said.

In one of the posts on X, he wrote that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed and all available resources mobilised by the state government to relocate people.
