On Thursday, the Congress party published a strong attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ridiculing his foreign policy strategy on the basis of recent moves and comments made by former US President Donald Trump. Congress used the well-known song, Dost dost na raha, in the 1964 movie, Sangam, to draw focus to what it termed as a failure in the diplomatic position of India under Modi.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who heads the communications department, drew pointed attention to the destiny of the high-profile diplomatic engagements of Modi, like the Namaste Trump, Howdy Modi, and the so-called Huglomacy, indicating that there is no long-term payoff on these initiatives of India. He was worried when Trump invited the head of the Pakistan Army, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to the white house because he termed this as a step never witnessed before. Ramesh was reminded that Munir had already issued inflammatory and communally-charged utterances which were particularly connected to acts of terrorism, such as the attack in Pahalgam.
Ramesh also condemned the Trump administration’s economic actions against India, such as punitive tariffs on Indian exports and major changes to the H1B visa regime, asserting that they had an unequal impact on Indian employees. Reportedly, as cited by Ramesh, Trump had indicated that he had agreed on a strategic mutual defence agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, and at the same time, he punished India due to the long-established economic ties with Russia. The scheduled visit of Trump to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Munir to the White House only enhanced the concerns of Congress with regard to India being diplomatically isolated.
Ramesh, in his comments, has emphasised that the strategy of Modi, especially the huglomacy strategy, has turned against him, and India has failed to enshrine its national interest internationally. “Namaste, Trump ka kya huwa? Howdy Modi ka kya huwa? Huglomacy ka kya huwa? Dost dost na raha,” he said, throwing weight to the apparent ineffectiveness of the personal diplomacy of Modi in changing into real foreign policy benefits.
