In Madhya Pradesh, even after taking consistent measures to deal with corrupt officers and employees, there is no indication that bribery cases are reducing. Almost every district also hears of the demands of officials for illegal gratification. The most recent one has been the one in Mandla district, where the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) apprehended a District Project Coordinator (DPC) red-handed who took a bribe of 60,000 as a school principal. When the accused official was reported, the action was still being taken against him.
As per reports, the accused DPC had sought a bribe of 70,000 rupees in the guise of an inquiry to the principal of Vidya Niketan Public School. He had accepted the initial payment of 60,000 close to a petrol pump of Reliance. But the EOW Jabalpur team acted upon a tip-off and, in the process of making the deal, arrested the official as he was receiving the money.
After his arrest, the authorities launched the proceedings against him under different sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The issue of corruption in the administrative machinery of the state comes out once again in this case. Even as the government and its institutions continuously strive to check cases of bribery, cases such as these indicate the struggles that still lie ahead in relation to the establishment of clean and transparent governance.
The arrest in Mandla not only reveals the wickedness of the officials but also indicates the boldness of the complainants who take a step forward to report such demands. The intervention of EOW has been timely in sending a good message to the government employees that corruption will not be promoted. Nevertheless, the fact that such instances still occur indicates that there is a need for to enforcement of more vigilance, awareness, and responsibility in order to prevent the officials from engaging in corrupt practices.
This move is likely to act as a deterrent and also make more citizens rise to condemn bribery.
