The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Cyclone Alert in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, as a result of a cyclonic circulation which is developing over the Bay of Bengal and is likely to intensify beginning from September 24. The authorities also advised about a low-pressure system that might escalate, and hence, local authorities issued warnings about ports across the islands. Heavy rains are expected up to September 25, with the IMD indicating that thunderstorms, strong winds of 40-50 km/h, the lightning are expected in one or two areas on the islands on September 24.
It was also predicted on September 25-26 that the department would receive heavier showers (7-11 cm) over Andaman Island, with the same thunderstorm profile occurring over Andaman and Nicobar Islands. September 27-28, the weather may deteriorate, with squalls and surface winds of 35-45km/h (gusts up to 55km/h) in the Andaman Sea and in the coastlines of the islands. The sea conditions are anticipated to continue being rough in the next five days, causing fishermen to remain on shore until September 25.
The management of the Islands has also encouraged boat owners, inhabitants, and tourists to be cautious with their sailing in the oceans and be on high alert in case of sudden wave surges. Leisure activities in the sea or coastal areas are highly discouraged as long as the conditions remain unfavorable. The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) is also already in the process of rescheduling departures, diverting or delaying vessels to Campbell Bay, Nancowry, Katchal, and other islands in order to avoid the oncoming swell.
The warning of the IMD, which was based on satellite data and observations on the surface, emphasizes the possibility of the development of a low-pressure system into a real cyclonic storm. The local governments have thus placed emergency measures and shelters on standby, and communication lines are open to updates. The residents are encouraged to view the latest bulletins every day, lock valuables, and avoid coastal promontories.
With the tropical system gaining pace, the Andaman and Nicobar people are on high alert. Congressional actions between the meteorological agencies, shipping authorities, and local governments attempt to preserve lives and property with minimal harm to the maritime economy in areas of crucial importance.
