On Monday, the Ministry of Home Affairs declared that the prohibition of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) which is popularly known as NSCN(K) has been renewed by five years. It will become effective on 28 September 2025, as per the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and continue to be effective until December of 2030.
It comes after increasing worries that the group has failed to abandon its operations that compromise the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of India. In its statement, the Ministry has reiterated the need that the NSCN(K) has long been seeking to establish an independent Nagaland that includes the whole of Naga-inhabited areas in the Indo-Myanmar border. The stated goals of the organization as declared by the Ministry conflict with the constitution of India.
Another point raised by the government is that NSCN(K) is not operating in a vacuum. The council has made alliances with other banned groups, in which are the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), the People Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PRP) and the People Liberation Army (PLA). These kinds of partnerships, the Ministry cautioned, enhance the danger of the group.
In addition to political agitation, the Ministry cited a variety of crimes committed by NSCN(K). These are the kidnapping of ransom, extorting businesses, bribing government officials, and threatening citizens. The organisation is even said to be in possession of unlawful guns and ammunition. Moreover, the government asserts that the council has been recruiting the help of anti-India groups in foreign land in order to acquire weapons and other forms of support thus pushing its influence across the borders of India.
The Ministry is reiterating the effort to contain insurgency and protect the national security by extending the ban. It is also a very strong message that any effort to destabilise the region by armed resistance will be met with a lot of legal action. The 5-year extension will offer necessary legal smoke screen to the law-enforcement agencies to monitor, investigate, and destroy the NSCN(K), and as such more peace and stability will be experienced in the northeastern frontier of the nation.
