Shahdol. Gross negligence by the Water Resources Department has come to light in Kudeli village, under the Budhar Janpad Panchayat. A 3-kilometer-long canal, built at a cost of crores of rupees, collapsed and washed away within just six months. The canal collapse not only destroyed crores of rupees in water, but also ruined the crops of several nearby villages.
Villagers say that this canal, built at a cost of approximately one crore rupees, was the main source of water for agriculture, but due to poor and substandard construction, it collapsed within a few months. The situation is such that farmers are unable to access water from the canal to irrigate their fields, destroying both their hard work and hopes.
Villagers allege widespread negligence and corruption in the construction work. They accuse the responsible officials and contractors of using substandard materials. They say that if the construction work had been carried out with transparency and integrity, the canal, built at a cost of crores, would not have been washed away so quickly.
The most shocking thing about this case is that the Water Resources Department and the responsible officials have remained silent. The damage caused to farmers by the canal breach has not been assessed, nor has any action been taken. Villagers have demanded a high-level investigation into the matter and strict action against the culprits, so that such negligence does not result in future losses to farmers’ hard work and the government treasury.
