The Income Tax Department has announced that over six crore income tax returns have already been filed, with only two days to go to the deadline to make the income tax returns (ITR) for the assessment year 2025-26. The number keeps on increasing as taxpayers are scrambling to complete the process by the final day of September 15.

So far, any additional extension of the deadline has not been officially announced. The department has already provided relief earlier this year by assigning a later date of ITR submission (instead of July 31), resulting in more time available to taxpayers to submit the income received in the financial year 2024-25. Failure to meet this long deadline will attract punishment and interest on the same under the Income Tax Act.

The department updated its official handle on X (previously Twitter) and also requested that taxpayers who have not yet submitted their returns do so without delay so that they can avoid glitches at the last moment. The Income Tax helpdesk has been made available 24/7 to serve the taxpayers in need. The help is being offered in various ways, such as by making phone calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and communication via social media.

“We encourage those who have not yet submitted their ITR to submit it as soon as possible to eliminate the last-minute rush. Carry this wave on,” the department wrote in its post.

The promotion of digital filing by the government has made tax regulation very efficient and accessible as people and businesses find it easier to adhere to tax laws. As the deadline is now imminent, the department keeps on urging people to adhere to it in good time to avoid congestion on the last day.

Those tax experts have also recommended that people should not postpone until the end as the delays might result in server slows or technical bugs.
