The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), in a well-planned operation, arrested five of the escapees of a Nepal jail stationed on the way to crossing the border to India, the officials confirmed. This interception occurred on the India-Nepal border in the Siddharthnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, where the successive evaders were attempting to enter Indian soil.
The officials state that the SSB officers spotted the individuals when conducting regular checkups at an outpost at the border and arrested them instantly. The prisoners failed to generate any valid identity documents, and this prompted the SSB to arrest them. It was established after initial investigation that these were some of the inmates who broke out of jail in Nepal yesterday, said an official, who asked to remain anonymous.
The arrested were then delivered to the local police to carry out investigations and prosecution. The SSB, or Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs in India, is charged with the responsibility to guard the 1,751 km open border of the country with Nepal, and 699 km with Bhutan. The force has been kept on high alert after recent unrest in Nepal.
This mass jailbreak happened at Dillibazar Jail in Kathmandu, when the jail was in a state of chaos as the protestors against corruption continued their campaign, conducted by the youth activists in Nepal. Prison breakouts contributed to the security problem in the capital, and the Nepalese Army was deployed in and around the jail to curb the situation. It was alleged that local police pulled out of their stations except at headquarters, and the army was called upon to take law and order.
Officials indicated that the vigilance and prompt action by the SSB had averted a likely security failure at the border, and therefore, the prisoners who had escaped could not run into the Indian territory. This exercise underscores the current cooperation of security forces and law enforcement agencies in ensuring cross-border security in the face of unrest in Nepal, its neighbour.
