Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday emphasized the importance of the persistent relevance of land dominance in contemporary warfare and declared that in the Indian context, land will be the currency of war. Talking in a gathering of the All India Management Association, the Chief pointed out that an army is not to destroy and deny, air and naval forces are to do this; it is the task of the army to evict and occupy the territory, which determines the final result of the conflicts.
With reference to the August 15 Alaska summit between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the territorial control in the ongoing war in Russia Ukraine was a central topic of conversation, Army Chief General Dwivedi emphasized that land is the central factor in the resolution of a conflict. To the army, it is not the action of destruction but eviction and occupation of land. In India, with our 2.5-front confrontation- China, Pakistan, and domestic insurgencies- land will still remain as the final yardstick of success, he opined.
Emphasizing the shifting nature of warfare, the Chief of the Army mentioned the global conflicts in order to demonstrate unpredictability. The analysts had predicted that the war that Russia had gotten into with Ukraine would take only a few days but, as he remembered, it had taken years to get through. In the same way, the Iran-Iraq war went on for ten years, whereas the Indian Operation Sindoor was curtailed within a much shorter time than expected. Examples like these, he reasoned, illustrate the vagueness of the period and severity of wars.
General Dwivedi responded to such challenges by urging India to develop technological advantage against its enemies, develop long-range strike capabilities, and be prepared to engage in prolonged wars. “We have to know the technological advantage of the opponent and get ready.” He said, “Our goal must be to maintain and to win longer wars.”
His statement is in the context of growing regional tensions, which highlights the fact that the army is paying attention to modernization, warfare based on technologies.
