Sukma. Continuous heavy rains in Bastar have disrupted life. Rivers and streams are overflowing. Traffic has been blocked on National Highway-30 connecting Sukma district headquarters to Jagdalpur due to waterlogging. Boats have also started plying on the National Highway. Passengers stranded in the floods for more than 24 hours were assisted in crossing the river by the Nagar Sainik Relief and Rescue Team. With the rains stopping, the water level of the rivers, streams and roads is decreasing rapidly. At many places, the water has receded from the roads.
85 families had to vacate their homes after the situation worsened in Mandar village of Lohandiguda tehsil due to heavy rains. The administration and rescue team took charge in the flood-affected areas and took people to safe places. The SDRF team took major action and rescued 15 villagers from the water-logged areas. At the same time, 5 people were airlifted to the relief center with the help of a helicopter. Fortunately, there has been no news of any loss of life in this disaster.
Rivers and streams are in spate in Jagdalpur city and rural areas and there was a situation of jam on many roads. The road on Keshlur Marg turned into a river, where queues of vehicles remained for hours. A Raipur-based couple and their two daughters went missing in the incident of a car being swept away on the Darbha Jheeram Valley road. The administration has put the entire area on high alert and relief and rescue work is going on continuously.
Two Girls Missing In Nelgunda
A major accident took place on Monday evening at Nelgunda Ghat, when a canoe crossing the river suddenly overturned. Two girls from Belnar village in the canoe were swept away by the strong current and are still missing. Other villagers somehow managed to reach the shore by swimming and saved their lives. As soon as the information about the incident was received, the administration and the Nagarsena team reached the spot. The search operation continued till late night, but the girls could not be found. Even on Tuesday morning, divers and relief teams continued to search for them in the river. Villagers said that the accident happened due to the continuous rise in the water level of the river. Due to continuous rain, the rivers and streams are in spate and there is an atmosphere of panic in the rural areas. The administration has appealed to the people not to go near the rivers and streams. Villagers say that due to the strong current, crossing the river is proving to be dangerous every day.
