In the Bagdona area of the Sarni Municipal Council area in the Betul district of Madhya Pradesh, a big accident has been reported. A truck driver was driving at high speed, and late last night, it was alleged that the driver was drunk and ran over the cattle that were occupying the road. Tragically, these accidents led to the death of six cattle instantly, as four others were seriously injured.
The entire scene was recorded on CCTV cameras, and therefore, it was evident in the way the driver handled the dangerous situation. The event after the accident, local people flocked to the area and, together with the police group, immediately organised the handling of the injured animals. Eyewitnesses showed their anger and sorrow and asserted that it is the fault of the municipal council to act irresponsibly. To them, the administration has continually failed to take any serious steps to contain the menace of stray cattle on the roads, a perennial problem in the region.
According to the local people, notwithstanding repeated complaints and warnings, the problem has not received a permanent solution. They pointed out that the local government should have established sufficient facilities to house stray animals, and the highways and major roads in the city needed to be made uninhabitable by these. The accident, they added, is indicative of a bigger problem of mismanagement and lack of concern with regard to animal welfare and road safety.
The driver of the truck has been registered with a case, and an investigation has been launched. It was confirmed by the authorities that severe legal measures will be applied to him. In the interim, the people of Sarni are pressing the municipal government to take some action and expect a very strong and permanent mechanism to be put in place so as to ensure that there are no stray cattle wandering on the streets. With the sad death of these six innocent animals, there arises again the need to have a more strict traffic rules, more responsible driving, and more proper civic rules to prevent similar accidents in the future.
