The Samajwadi Party leader, Akhilesh Yadav, on Tuesday visited the former Supreme Court Judge and candidate of the INDIA bloc as a Vice-President, B. Sudershan Reddy, in Lucknow and wished him in the upcoming elections. Reddy was escorted with a grand welcome to Lucknow Airport earlier in the day, where he was received by a large number of supporters.
Retd. Justice Describing the occasion as an honour, Reddy filed his nomination papers on August 21 for the Vice President post. He swore to serve the ideals of the Constitution (with a sense of impartiality, dignity and responsibility) in case he were elected. The nomination was made in the presence of other senior leaders of the Congress, including the party President Mallikarjun Kharge, party Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi, indicating a united effort behind the candidature of the INDIA bloc.
Reddy said in a statement after submitting his nomination papers, “I had the privilege of submitting my nomination papers as a joint candidate of the opposition parties, to the Office of the Vice President of India. I do so in humility, responsibility and with unfading upholding of the values enshrined in our Constituent.”
There will be a direct contest in the election of the Vice President of India on September 9 between Reddy, who has the backing of the INDIA bloc, and the incumbent C. P. Radhakrishnan, backed by the NDA. The Election Commission has declared that voting and counting will be done on the same day.
This was due to the departure of Jagdeep Dhankhar as the Vice President due to his health, as he relinquished the post on July 21 at the beginning of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Justice Reddy has recently stated that the election is not a duel between men, but that the clash is in ideas, and that he is a challenger to the ideology of the NDA and not to its candidate, Radhakrishnan, personally.
