Although BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia refuted rumours that Shreyas Iyer is the frontrunner to become the next ODI skipper of India in the wake of the external factors that could force Rohit Sharma to step down as the ODI leader, speculations around the future of Iyer in the leadership have recently reappeared. Former India batsman Manoj Tiwary has come out in support of Iyer as a possible captain, but said a battle is bound to occur, especially with Shubman Gill also in the picture; he also enjoys the support of head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Having steadily made a name as a quality captain, Shreyas Iyer has lately become a warmer to be an Indian captain in white-ball cricket. He is the current captain of Mumbai in the domestic competition of the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy and has also led India A as part of the Rahul Dravid-led coaching set-up since 2018. His track record expanded greatly on the IPL, where he has managed three franchises to reach the final in three consecutive years: Delhi Capitals to the 2020 final, KKR to the 2024 title and Punjab Kings to the 2025 showpiece. The feat qualifies him as the first skipper in the history of IPL to get into the final with three distinct clubs.
In addition to statistics, the manner in which Iyer approaches captaincy has been applauded due to his aggressive captaincy style that gives importance to leadership on the field. Tiwary talked of this when asked in an interview, as he said, “Other than Rohit, I would say Shreyas Iyer since he is a franchise player and he has captained competitions in domestic cricket. He is a consistent scorer, takes important decisions and leads the team by example: the attributes of a captain that can be successful.”
Tiwary also baulked at the storyline of KKR winning the IPL in 2024, citing that Iyer did not get the recognition that he deserved. PR machineries changed the assignment to Gambhir as a mentor as against Iyer or Nurturer, and other membership fabrics such as Chandrakant Pandit and Bharat Arun.
