Indore. India has taken a historic step towards environmental protection. Realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision, Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) has set up the country’s first bioplastic (polylactic acid-PLA) plant. This is a step that will prove to be a big weapon in the ongoing fight against single-use plastic.’

Sachin Bansal, President of Indian Plast Pack Forum, said that the sugar obtained from sugarcane is converted into polylactic acid (PLA), from which many types of products can be made. The most important thing is that these products are completely eco-friendly. They can be easily disposed of by burying them in the soil after use, which does not cause any harm to the environment.

Why is this plant so important?

Till now, raw material for making PLA was imported from abroad, which was very expensive. Its production in India will not only reduce prices but will also increase self-reliance. Shweta Suryavanshi, a representative of Balrampur Chini Mills, said that this new venture will help in setting up India’s first industrial-scale bio-polymer plant, which is in line with India’s sustainable development goals.

Cutlery, cups, bottles, straws, toys, flex banners and even PPE kits can be made from this bioplastic. It is a great and sustainable alternative to traditional plastic. Along with industrialists, a large number of college students, researchers and academicians also participated in this program, which shows the seriousness and future prospects of this initiative. This plant can prove to be a game-changer for India, which will not only help in reducing pollution but will also lay the foundation for a self-reliant and green future.
