There is a political outrage in Bihar after the presence of two Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislators at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Gaya on Friday. Magadh University is the University where the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones of development projects worth nearly 13,000 crore. Nawada MLA Vibha Devi and Rajauli MLA Prakash Veer were on the dais. Their presence with the Prime Minister has triggered speculation of possible unrest in the RJD as well as the suggestion of possible crossover.

The relation of the Vibha Devi family with the party has not been very smooth. Her husband, a former MLA, Raj Ballabh Yadav, was recently cleared by the Patna High Court in a POCSO case after several years in jail. As much as he had a strong political influence on Nawada, the RJD did not provide the family a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which is said to have created friction. To this, Raj Ballabh’s brother, Binod Yadav, left the RJD and fought on an Independent ticket in Nawada, putting further strains on the relationship with the party.

Meanwhile, Rajauli MLA Prakash Veer is also seen to differ with RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, signalling the presence of unease in party ranks.

Ruling out speculation of a hatching of defections, BJP MP Vivek Thakur also clarified that all elected representatives were invited to the event, irrespective of their political affiliation. Many projects were launched, and different departments took part in these activities. MLAs, MLCs, and MPs of all parties were invited; this is the reason why, combined with mass mobilization, it was able to attract so many, Thakur said. Although a number of Opposition leaders boycotted the summit, those who attended were there in their official capacities, not as a political show of strength.

Nevertheless, the visuals of RJD MLAs rubbing shoulders with the Prime Minister have elicited even some speculation within the political circles of Bihar.
