PM Modi Bengal Visit: PM Narendra Modi is visiting West Bengal rapidly to prepare the ground for the assembly elections to be held next year and to break into Mamata Didi’s stronghold. With frequent visits, he is inaugurating a host of development projects and addressing public rallies, seeking to project a pro-development agenda and energize the party’s grassroots workers. These visits are a clear attempt to challenge the dominance of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its leader, Mamata Banerjee.

Once again today during PM Modi Bengal visit, he will inaugurate three new metro lines in Kolkata today. This includes the Yellow Line (Noapara-Jai Hind / Biman Bandar), Green Line (Sealdah-Esplanade), and Orange Line (Beleghata-Hemant Mukhopadhyay). The vision of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mainly inspired these metro routes. However, CM Mamata Banerjee will not attend the inauguration ceremony.

“The city for whose development we are resolute, coming to the people of that Kolkata is always a joy for me. The events in Kolkata tomorrow are primarily related to transportation. The metro services on the Noapara-Jai Hind Airport, Sealdah-Esplanade, and Beliaghata-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay routes will be inaugurated. This will make commuting to the airport and the IT hub more convenient”, wrote PM Modi on X ahead of his state visit.

Mamta Banerjee & PM Modi Bengal Visit

Mamata Banerjee has served as railway minister twice – first from October 13, 1999 to March 16, 2001 and second from May 22, 2009 to May 19, 2011. Her vision and contribution to the development of railways gave a new shape to Kolkata’s metro projects. A senior official said that these three metro lines were originally conceived by Mamata Banerjee when she was the railway minister.

Mamata Banerjee also changed the original alignment for the Sealdah-Esplanade section of the Green Line. Initially the line was supposed to run via Central Avenue, but Mamata Banerjee revised it from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake via BBD Bagh and Esplanade. The first phase of this route (Wipro to Salt Lake Stadium) was launched in February 2022 and the section from Salt Lake Stadium to Sealdah was commissioned on 11 July 2022.

By highlighting the central government’s initiatives and critiquing the state’s governance, Modi aims to appeal to voters and create a narrative that positions the BJP as a viable alternative. The political landscape in West Bengal is becoming a key battleground, with both major parties actively vying for public support.
