Rajnath Singh and Devendra Fadnavis have gone out to woo Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray to seek his support in the September 9 vice-presidential election. Their plea has been in support of CP Radhakrishnan, the incumbent Governor of Maharashtra, who has been nominated by the largest National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate to hold its post.
Corroborating the growth, the leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), Sanjay Raut, explained that such requests are the norm when it comes to elections. Fadnavis and Uddhav were in touch, and Fadnavis had also urged Uddhav to give support in the election for the vice-presidential post. “Their responsibility lies in demanding help, and there is nothing special in that. Others might also have sought his support, but again, we have to see what the party high command decides,” Raut added.
Meanwhile, Fadnavis appealed to those political parties whose origins are embedded in the identity of Maharashtra: Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Nationalist Congress Party led by Sharad Pawar, to lend their support to Radhakrishnan. He has stressed that Radhakrishnan, besides being a governor of the state, is a voter in Mumbai, and participated actively in last year s State assembly elections. Keeping in mind his service to the state and people, I would ask people like Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar to support his candidature, Fadnavis said.
Shiv Sena (UBT) has nine members in the Lok Sabha and two members in the Rajya Sabha, and since it is a close-fought election, its support is of strategic importance. Whereas the NDA has the numeric supremacy, the support of opposition parties can help in determining the narratives of the political environment. Instead, the action by Uddhav Thackeray will be monitored to observe how the Sena intends to reconcile the regional pride of Maharashtra with the national political factors.
