Mumbai was in the throes of constant monsoon downpours on Tuesday, and once again, very heavy rainfall weather conditions have been predicted. Officials reacted to a red alert when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that schools and colleges were ordered shut, and the University of Mumbai on Monday postponed exams. The downpour of heavy rain in the city is in the fourth days, and the accumulated rainfall during the 81-hour period that was between Friday and Monday evening was 550mm of rain- virtually the same amount of rainfall as recorded in August during the month.
The never-ceasing rain has already put a strain on the state, as well as the city. A wall collapse in Malabar Hill on Monday, killing one person, and one person drowned in Bandra Kurla Complex. A tree fall in Parsi Wadi, resulting in one person being injured. Six others, including a child, died in cases linked to inches across Maharashtra, and six more have been reported missing.
The data on rainfall indicates the harshness of the situation. At 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Santacruz registered 238 mm and Colaba 110.4 mm in the 24 hours preceding the time. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) estimated that western suburbs had more than 208 mm of rainfall, whereas eastern suburbs had above 238 mm, and places such as Dadar, Chincholi, and Malad had over 300 mm. Mumbai had already received 75.87 percent of its annual quota of precipitation figure of 2207, surpassing the figure since May.
The waterlogged city experienced a lot of flooding. In Shirodkar Market of Parel, it submerged the streets with ankle-deep water, whereas over two feet of water was reported in Dargah Road, Sewri, Nagpada, and Hindmata junction. Traffic flow was terribly hampered, and deployment of more traffic police officers had to be done in various busy junctions, such as Oberoi in Goregaon East. A 10 to 15-minute delay in suburban trains was also experienced.
When the Mithi river approached a danger mark, the National Disaster Response Force was placed in a standby mode.
