In a dramatic diplomatic move, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his international partners seem to be weighing a peace agreement that would see Ukraine obtain “robust security guarantees” in exchange for an end to the war.

The terms being offered are said to be dictated by Moscow and communicated by U.S. President Donald Trump, revolve around a legislative compact based on Article 5 of the NATO treaty. This agreement would compel states to defend Ukraine if it is attacked. Thus, providing it with the de facto protection of a NATO member without formal affiliation.

The possibility of such a deal has raised questions and concerns among European and Ukrainian leaders, who are wary of any agreement that could be perceived as capitulation. Zelenskyy, who recently met with Trump in Washington, has expressed a desire for a “real, living peace” and has called for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin to discuss the details.

President Donald Trump also said he expected Putin to release over 1,000 Ukrainian prisoners after a trilateral meeting was set up with Zelensky. “I know there are over 1000 prisoners and I know they are going to release them. Maybe they’re going to release them very soon, like immediately”, said the US President.

India, maintaining its consistent position on the conflict, has reiterated its support for diplomacy and dialogue as the only path to a peaceful resolution. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he received a phone call from President Vladimir Putin, who shared his insights on a recent meeting with Donald Trump in Alaska. Modi said India “has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard”, and he looks forward to “continued exchanges” with Putin.

India’s position underscores a broader global desire for an end to the conflict, but also highlights the complex geopolitical calculations at play for nations with ties to both sides.
