On Monday, August 18, the Airtel users experienced a major network outage that affected thousands of people throughout Delhi-NCR and left most of them with no means to make calls or use mobile internet. The customers across social media platform X brought prominence to the issue with #AirtelDown, gaining prominence in a short time.
The outage-tracking portal Downdetector shows that over 3,600 complaints of network failure were logged at around 4:32 p.m. Monday. Most of these complaints centred on mobile phone problems, the second highest complaint being mobile signal strengths, and the connectivity of the mobile data. Some users complained on social media, stating that they could not connect to family or work associates as a result of the outage.
In response to such a post, Airtel admitted to such disruption in the service and assured customers that the company was trying to resume connectivity as soon as possible. “We know about the problem, and we have the team working on the solution. Airtel responded: We apologise for the inconvenience.”
This was accompanied by a number of complaints, which were mostly raised by the users in Delhi-NCR, but other customers alleged that it was not localized to the areas served by the network in Delhi only, but that the Airtel network had crashed elsewhere as well. This prompted fears of a system-wide breakdown with the Airtel company not yet affirming the extent of the mishap.
On X, one user complained: If you are an Airtel user and you can’t make calls, you are not alone. Sounds like a mass outage.” One more customer assured others: Connectivity is compromising. Do not get panicked in case you cannot get in touch with loved ones. It will all pass, be patient.”
The disruption is one of the greatest service failures experienced by Airtel in recent times. As the process of restoration is undertaken, the company has assured to update statuses; however, a lot of users are hesitant about continuing the crowded connectivity problems with India’s second-largest telecom service provider.
