A fire broke out at the Mother and Child Block of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Thursday, August 14, triggering a mass emergency response. Delhi Fire Services said ten fire tenders were hurried to the spot to contain the fire. There were no casualties or injuries because, due to the promptness of the fire officials and hospital staff, people did not notice any tragic results.
It is inconclusive as to what started the fire, but it is believed that it started somewhere within the block. With the alert, emergency measures were implemented, and patients, as well as the medical personnel, were evacuated urgently from the affected areas. The immediate delivery of fire tenders restricted the flames until they could cause damage in other areas of the hospital.
AIIMS authorities also verified that although some areas of the Mother and Child Block have been damaged, it has not caused disruption to the core medical services. The daily hospital services have been left intact in other regions, and repairs will already be under discussion in the damaged space.
This case happens amidst the constant repeated instructions regarding the relevance of fire safety readiness in key national facilities, such as AIIMS. The hospital has also been carrying out fire audits as a routine practice, and it includes verification of electrical wiring, fire alarms, and extinguishing systems. Among its safety procedures is to conduct staff fire drills and regular maintenance of safety tools.
The government has been able to calm people down by promising that they will conduct an elaborate investigation to determine the cause of the fire and thus avert a possible recurrence in the future. The case demonstrates that even though a quick and coordinated action helped prevent a possible catastrophe, it should lead to increased vigilance and adequate infrastructure that will be used to maintain the safety of staff and patients in high-stakes healthcare facilities.
