The Punjab Police on Thursday said it had thwarted a big terror plot connected with Pakistan-based Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) cadre, Harwinder Singh Rinda, by arresting two of his gang members. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the accused were in the process of planning to use grenades in making attacks on government buildings.
On a tip-off based on certain intelligence inputs, the Counter-Intelligence squad based in Ferozepur rushed to the area and made the arrests. The two arrested are authenticated couriers of BKI and were, as claimed, acting on the personal instructions of the handlers operating in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Europe. The Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan (ISI) was said to have sponsored the terror plan to demonstrate the cross-border aid with terror plans.
In the process, the police found substantial weapons and bullets that included two hand grenades, a Beretta 9mm pistol, and live rounds. According to officials, the arrests had possibly avoided a potentially devastating attack on government infrastructure and possibly lives too as well as extensive property damage.
Speaking to the media, DGP Yadav said that the Punjab Police continues to sustain the fight against dismantling terrorist networks in the state, particularly those backed by some foreign sources. He commended the Counter Intelligence team that acted as quick as possible after getting the effective input and carried out the operation quickly.
The problem highlighted in the case is the persistence of the security issues in Punjab as militant groups with international connections still make efforts to destabilisation. The government has continued investigations to find contacts of other people involved in the affair of the detained terrorists, fund distribution, and the extent of the conspiracy.
In its commitments to fighting terrorism and protecting the lives and property of everyone, the Punjab Police was resolute in giving terrorists and all forms of trouble makers a very hard time to honor their respective intentions.
