It is feared that at least 10 individuals died after a huge cloudburst hit Chishoti village in Padder sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday. This took place on the pilgrimage path of an annual Machail Mata Yatra, which is a religious pilgrimage, and thousands of pilgrims visit annually. The tragedy has attracted fast reaction measures where rescue and relief efforts are being conducted in adverse weather conditions.
They said that the flash flooding and debris flow-like situations caused by sudden cloudburst left a remote area devastated by severe destruction. Jitendra Singh, a Union Minister, also said that he met Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma upon the alerting of the local MLA and leader of the opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly, Sunil Kumar Sharma.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha termed the disaster as his most immediate priority and mentioned that he had tasked civil administration, police, army, and teams of the NDRF and the SDRF to ramp up rescue efforts and provide maximum relief to the affected. The rugged terrain and continued rains have been a major problematic issue to the teams that are deployed to find missing individuals and assist the survivors.
The track coincides with the heavy monsoon rainfall in the country, with the hilly states being the worst hit. One state in particular, Uttarakhand, has managed to endure several natural disasters in the past few weeks in terms of cloudbursts, floods, and mudslides.
In Nandprayag, Chamoli district, roads had earlier been blocked this week after a landslide occurred following rainfall, days after a rampaging cloudburst broke out in Uttarkashi, causing widespread damage. Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari added that clearance of the road is in process, and other passages were in functional condition. In Uttarkashi, the bridge that links the town to the nearby location of Harsil has been replaced, and this has made the transfer of relief materials to the locations devastated by the August 5 cloudburst and flash floods resume.
