Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina seems to be trapped in the betting app case. ED has summoned Suresh Raina in the betting app case and called him to the office for questioning today (August 13). This entire matter is about the illegal betting platform 1xBet. Betting app 1xBet made Suresh Raina its gaming ambassador in December last year. The betting company had then said that our partnership with Suresh Raina will encourage sports betting fans to bet responsibly.
Earlier, the ED investigation team had conducted searches at 15 locations in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Madurai and Surat to bust a betting racket operating another betting app ‘Parimatch’.
ED has intensified its investigation into illegal online betting platforms in the recent past and is focusing its attention on the advertisements being done by film personalities and cricketers for such betting platforms. As part of the ongoing investigation into the matter of advertising for banned betting platforms 1xBet, FairPlay, Parimatch and Lotus365, the ED has previously questioned former cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh as well as actors Sonu Sood and Urvashi Rautela.
According to ED sources, ‘These betting platforms are using pseudonyms like 1xbat and 1xbat Sporting Lines in their advertisements. These advertisements often contain QR codes that redirect users to betting sites. This is a blatant violation of Indian law. Notices have been issued to some celebrities advertising for such betting platforms.
The investigation into the case began in 2024 when a case was registered at a Mumbai police station under the Money Laundering Act. Initial investigations revealed that the money collected from the cheated consumers was deposited in a mule account/illegal account. This money was distributed through several agents. According to reports, this amount could be more than Rs 2,000 crore. Since Suresh Raina became the brand ambassador of the betting company, his statement will be recorded in this case on Wednesday.
