The Ganga crossed danger mark in Varanasi, flooding 84 ghats, over 30 villages, and homes. 6,583 people moved to shelters. Roads, temples, and schools hit. Parts of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh were flooded on Wednesday after heavy rain caused the River Ganga’s water level to rise sharply. Due to the flood, about 6,583 people had to leave their homes and move to safer places, including relief camps and temporary shelters, as per reports.

Several low-lying areas of Patna, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Bhojpur, Khagaria, Purnea, Madhepura, Saharsa and Katihar districts witnessed a flood-like situation, they said.

Heavy rain in the past few days has raised the water level of the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Ganga, Burhi Gandak, Mahananda and Kamla rivers in the state.

According to the latest bulletin of the Water Resources Department (WRD), “the Ganga river is flowing above danger level (as of 9 a.m. on Saturday) at places like Maner, Danapur, Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat, Banka Ghat and Hathidah. The water level of other rivers across the state has also risen following incessant rains over the past two to three days.”
