Amritsar: Due to continuous rain in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, the water level of Pong Dam is increasing rapidly. In the last 24 hours, the water level of the dam has increased by 5 feet to 1365.26 feet, which was earlier 1361.07 feet. This water level has reached close to the danger mark. If the water level continues to rise like this for the next two days, then the floodgates of the dam can be opened.

At present, 1,25,099 cusecs of water is coming into Pong Dam, while 16,500 cusecs of water is being released through 6 turbines of Maharana Pratap Lake, Beas River, and Shah Canal Barrage. The total capacity of Pong Dam is 1420 feet, but the level of 1380 to 1390 feet is considered dangerous. If the water level reaches 1380 feet, then the flood gates are opened and water is released.

The dam has 6 turbines, each of which generates 210 megawatts of electricity. There is a possibility of further rain in Himachal Pradesh, due to which the water level of the dam may increase further. The administration has given instructions to take all necessary steps to deal with the possible flood situation.
