The fast is normally done between sunrise and the following sunrise, and in this period, the devotees do not eat; rather, they spend the day praying, chanting the Vishnu mantras, and reading the sacred books such as the Vishnu Sahasranama. The completion of the fast is indicated by a Parana ritual that must be done at the right time.
