South Calcutta Law College, which was in the spotlight recently when a student was allegedly gang-raped on its premises, has put in place strict security measures to avert such an event in the future. The college management has come up with the decision of using ex-Army security personnel to replace the current security guards who are in charge of the college as a measure to guarantee foolproof security, as an official said on Saturday.

This decision was arrived at in a meeting of the governing body of the college, which considered the security lapses that the incident revealed. The official said the services of the former army men will help increase surveillance and disciplinary methods on the campus since they have had the experience and training of dealing with sensitive situations.

The college will also upgrade CCTV cameras in strategic places so that blind areas are captured and monitored to enhance security by strengthening the security staff. In addition, the internal complaints committee (ICC) of the college that addresses the cases of harassment and assault will be restructured and reinforced to ensure that the complaints are addressed properly and in a timely manner.

The case that has caused outrage across the country was the incident involving Monojit Mishra, a former student and contractual employee of the college, who is alleged to have secured the top-most accused position. Mishra was also a member of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) students wing. He, two other students, and a security guard were arrested. The arrests signaled the terrible security deficits in the camps and cast doubt on safety standards at the college.

The authorities have promised students and parents that the new precaution will make the place safer and that people will once more trust in the ability of the institution to allow its students to be safe. This initiative to engage the Army veterans, as well as the technical improvement made in the form of expansion of CCTVs, is a major milestone in the future approach to safeguard the college campus.
