The parliamentary procedure provides that the motion to disqualify Justice Yashwant Verma will be first introduced in the Lok Sabha, where Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has announced that this will be done. The action is based on grave accusations against Justice Verma, given that one of the episodes raised against him after fire had consumed his house, fire brigade officials retrieved burnt pieces of money.
Addressing a press conference, Rijiju has stated that the impeachment procedure is not only the state’s prerogative, but it is also a shared responsibility of Parliament. The move to remove Justice Yashwant Verma will be brought in the Lok Sabha and then agreed to by the Rajya Sabha. This is our collective decision that should be made by all political parties, as he made it known. He also made it clear that in matters of corruption in the judiciary, one should not take a partisan stand.
Rijiju further disclosed that the Centre is even developing a committee to look into the allegation against Justice Verma. Government sources also say there has already been considerable movement toward the impeachment, with more than 100 members of parliament signing in support of the impeachment motion. The campaign of the signature gathering process is in place, which guarantees that the required level of support is comfortably achieved.
To the question of whether the issue might come up in the current monsoon session of the Parliament, Rijiju stuck to his stand that it will be a collective decision of all parties to act on it. He emphasized that the move is a move to protect judicial integrity when he said, It is the responsibility of the whole parliament to deal with corruption in the superior courts and act as per the constitutional provisions.
It will be the next landmark in the historical process of impeachment after the impeachment motion is moved in the Lok Sabha, which is being supported, and then it has to be passed by the Rajya Sabha.
