India pauses today and will pause each passing year to remember and honour bravehearts who reclaimed sovereignty 26 years ago at Kargil. July 26th marks the Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day to commemorate the legacy of valour and sacrifice.

Undoubtedly, the Battle of Kargil has been unlike any war India has fought before, but it came at a humongous human cost of 545 martyred soldiers and 1300 injured. India celebrates it with two-day commemoration events that began this morning when the national tri-colour was hoisted at Lamochen viewpoint. Next of kin of several martyrs were felicitated at Lamochen by General Officer Commanding of 14 Corps Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla.

PM Narendra Modi on X posted a heartfelt greeting to the countrymen. He wrote, “This occasion reminds us of the unparalleled courage and valor of those brave sons of Mother India who dedicated their lives to protect the nation’s pride. Their passion to sacrifice everything for the motherland will continue to inspire every generation. Jai Hind!”.

The Army has planned a series of events on Saturday also on the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate the bravery and valour of officers and soldiers who took part in the two-month long battle with the Pakistanis.

The Army will launch three key projects today, including a portal where citizens can pay ‘e-shradhanjali’ to martyrs, as part of the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas to make people aware of soldiers’ bravery and sacrifices.
