NEW DELHI: India is preparing for a busy July as Parliament’s monsoon session begins today and the UN Security Council’s meeting for July is scheduled in Pakistan. As Pakistan steps up its diplomatic efforts, sources reveal that it is keen on discussing the Kashmir issue. Pakistan, which holds the Chair of the UN Security Council for the month of July, is preparing two signature events during its presidency.
“It is time for the Kashmir dispute to be addressed. And I would say, this is not solely Pakistan’s responsibility — we are here temporarily, serving a two-year term as a non-permanent member,” said Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, in a press conference on July 1.
Meanwhile, the Central government on Sunday signalled its willingness to discuss Operation Sindoor in Parliament. It indicated that it might also respond to US President Donald Trump’s claim of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, as the Opposition sharpened its demands during an all-party meeting attended by 54 opposition leaders ahead of the monsoon session.
Kiren Rijiju, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister, said the Central government was open to holding discussions on any topic of national importance, including Operation Sindoor during the session, which begins on Monday.
“We are open to discuss important issues such as Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack. These issues are of great importance to the nation. The government will never shy away from a discussion,” he said after the meeting.
