No more is the argument- BCCI is not only the wealthiest cricket governing body in the world; it is apparently the most influential national institution the world of cricket could have imagined. With the commercial powerhouse that is the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India has starved their global counterparts of their finances, hitting new extremes in revenue, media rights, and sponsors every year.
As per the financial report for the financial year 2023-24, the BCCI recorded an astonishing revenue of 9,741.7 crore, with the IPL accounting for a whopping 5,761 crore, which is almost 60 per cent of the revenues. These figures indicate how the IPL is core to the board in financial terms and how it has no commercial parallels in the cricketing circles.
According to business strategist and director Lloyd Mathias, the IPL turned out to be a golden goose to the BCCI back in 2007, and it has become the jewel of world cricket today. It keeps on rising in terms of profitability, and it also provides exposure and opportunity to grassroots talent, e.g., players of the Ranji trophy.
In addition to the IPL, the BCCI also earned 361 crore of non-IPL media rights. New products such as the Women’s Premier League, international broadcasting packages, have developed new measures of commercial sustainability. What is marvelous in the case of BCCI, however, is the amount of the reserves, which is hitting 30,000 crore now. With no raising of a bat, the board successfully makes about 1000 crores a year, in the form of interest.
The dominance of the BCCI is widespread throughout the world. According to reports, the ICC is literally dependent on the BCCI as regards revenue. It is not bringing in income on its own as much as it ought to.
Even when things go wrong, such as the interruption in this year’s IPL because of tensions between India and Pakistan along the border, the financial engine of the board has not stopped yet, making BCCI stand out as dominators in the world of cricket.
