West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has made official his retirement from international cricket so as to end his legendary career that has been brimming with firecracker performances, remains of enthusiasm, and world excitement. Aged 37 years, the Jamaican will leave the international cricket scene after playing two last T20 Internationals, which are against Australia and are to be played on 20 and 22 July, both of which will be held at the Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

Hard-hitting and all-rounder Russell, who also boasts of being a T20 specialist, affirmed that the forthcoming T20I showpiece would be his last on the West Indies tour. Russell is a versatile player in the T20 format and has played in all three formats, but most lethally in the T20 international arena, since the year 2019, when he retired from all other formats of cricket to play only the shortest version of cricket. He suffered injury setbacks in the recent past, but he continued to play an important part in the white-ball teams in the West Indies, as well as being a desirable prospect in most high-profile T20 events worldwide.

Writing an emotional message to the Cricket West Indies, Russell stated through the platform that he was so proud to have played in the maroon jersey. “I have had one of the proudest experiences of my life to have played with the West Indies. I never dreamed of becoming that good as a child, but the passion for the game was motivating me to strive to be better,” said.

He also focused on his personal importance as he finished his international career at Sabina Park, with friends and family. “There could not be a better tribute to say goodbye than playing before my hometown. I would like to be an idol to upcoming generations of Caribbean cricketers,” he added.

West Indies head coach Darren Sammy, who captained Russell, commended his professionalism and cut-throat competitiveness. “Andre was a warrior all the time in the field. Even in the case of West Indies cricket, where I led him or where I coached him, he was committed to the sport,” said Sammy.
