Chandigarh: Following cabinet approval, the law against the desecration of religious texts in Punjab has been introduced in the assembly for discussion. Introduced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the bill is named ‘The Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture (s) Act, 2025’, which is being known as the Desecration Bill against Holy Scriptures.

CM Bhagwant Mann wrote on X, “An important meeting of the Punjab Cabinet was convened in Chandigarh today. In which the ‘Punjab Prevention of Crimes against Holy Scriptures Bill-2025’ was approved to ensure strict punishment in cases of sacrilege of all religious scriptures. According to this bill, no person directly or indirectly involved in the incidents of sacrilege of the Holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Bhagavad Gita, Bible, Quran Sharif and other holy scriptures will be spared and the accused can be punished up to life imprisonment”.

Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa has demanded time to discuss this bill. Bajwa said that members should be given time to read the bill, so that only after that it can be discussed. On this, Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhawa has adjourned the session till Tuesday morning.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took a jibe at the Congress leader’s statement. He said, “The Congress party needs time for the sacrilege bill, from this you can guess their position. It was already being told by journalists that this bill will be introduced in this session, but the Congress did not prepare for it.” Targeting the opposition, he said that he hoped that this bill would be passed without any opposition.

After discussion, this bill will be sent to the select committee, which will take opinion on this issue from religious organizations, religious leaders and common people.
