On Monday, a strong earthquake of 6.7 magnitude hit off the coast of the Tanimbar Islands area in Indonesia, the national geophysics agency (BMKG) said. The earthquake registered at a depth of around 98 kilometres (translated to about 60.8 miles) below the Earth. Although the tremor was strong, the government assured that no tsunami was posed by the quake.

The German Research Centre of Geosciences (GFZ) confirmed the seismic activity as well, registering slightly different data with an estimation of the earthquake at 6.8 magnitude and an even shallower depth at 10 kilometres (6.2 miles). There are always some differences in readings between the various agencies involved in geology, but this especially occurs during the initial stages of reporting earthquakes.

There were no reports of any casualties or a loss of houses as a result of the shock damage, and even though the people were worried about the damage, there were tremors from the quake in several small towns in eastern Indonesia. There are emergency response teams that are on standby, especially in case of aftershocks or other developments.

Indonesia is positioned on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is a horseshoe-shaped area with high levels of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, which occur due to the constant movement, as well as the collision of tectonic plates on the surface. The area is among the most seismically prone places on our planet, so the level of preparedness in the case of earthquakes is an ever-present concern of both the government and the population.

The recent quake on Monday has added to the illustration of the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters. Although this event did not really have a significant effect, people in the government have advised the people to be careful and obey the security measures that are provided by the government in case of any aftershocks or if it happens again. Monitoring is being maintained further, and the geophysical agencies concerned will make the required updates.
