The Indian government has notified the Supreme Court that it can do very little to rescue Nimisha Priya, who is a Kerala-based nurse on execution in Yemen. Attorney General R. Venkataramani, representing the Centre, made these remarks in the court on Monday and stated that at this stage, the government can not do much because of the complicated political condition of the country, as well as the absence of formal dialogue in India against the region controlled by the Houthi.

“No diplomatic recognition has been given to Yemen. It is not like any other part of the world. The limit to what the Government of India can do is this far,” the Attorney General told the news agencies. He has said that going public may have aggravated it more and that the government is presently negotiating through the back door in a last-minute effort to rescue her life.

Nimisha Priya, who is a resident of Palakkad in Kerala, went to Yemen to work in 2011. In 2014, her husband and her daughter came back to India because of financial problems. Nimisha did not follow the family because she wanted to help them. Later on, she would marry a Yemeni national called Talal Abdo Mahdi to start a medical clinic. But it is claimed that Mahdi would beat and threaten her to the extent of taking away her passport. Nimisha is reported to have attempted a desperate attempt to sedate Mahdi in order to retrieve it and escape the country, but ended up with a fatal dose.

She was accused of the killing of Mahdi, and in 2020, an execution sentence was passed on her; she is currently in line to be executed on July 16. The Indian government has also accepted that it does not have any direct connection with the legal system or prison system in Yemen; thus, intervention is almost impossible. The court has realized the seriousness of the case, even though the available alternatives are dire.
