According to a report issued by the Financial Times, the Pentagon is pressuring some of its strategic partners, especially Japan and Australia, to spell out what they could do in the event of a military conflict between China and the United States over Taiwan. The request is headed by Elbridge Colby, the U.S undersecretary of defense policy, in a series of top-level negotiations with defense officers of both countries.
The individuals privy to the negotiations tell me that the United States has been seeking clarification on what Tokyo and Canberra will provide in case of crisis, especially in relation to Taiwan. The action has also been said to be a surprise to the two governments, considering that the United States does not even give Taiwan such a guarantee as a mutual defense treaty. Nevertheless, Washington is the most important provider of Taiwanese arms in addition to voicing its views supporting the self-governing expression.
Former Lieutenant Colonel Colby served as deputy assistant secretary of defense of strategy and force development in the first term of former President Donald Trump, and made headlines by arguing in favor of a pivot in U.S. military strategy, CMS, out of the Middle East and Europe, and into the Indo-Pacific world. Colby on social media restated the commitment by the Department of Defense to the America First agenda, which he termed as being anchored on restoring deterrence and peace through strength. The allies were also required to perform more in defense spending and rally together on security cooperation, which the president highlighted.
China has been increasing its military presence around Taiwan, and there is concern that this tension will add to the politics of the area. China views Taiwan as a rogue province and has not eliminated the possibility of using force in its bid to achieve unification. Taiwan, however, does not recognize the sovereignty of China and asserts that it is a democratic and self-governing nation.
