In good news for daily commuters, students and office goers, the local MEMU and DEMU passenger train services, which during the COVID-19 pandemic had been suspended due to safety reasons, are now finally going to be affected. The South East Central Railway has informed that these trains are to be gradually introduced on major routes beginning July 15, which will greatly help thousands of people of the region to overcome their daily commuting miseries.
The commuters using major stations like Durg, Rajnandgaon, Gondia, Katangi, Raipur, Dongargarh and Balaghat will benefit from this decision. This has been done following persistent efforts and follow-ups by Member of Parliament Santosh Pandey, who described the move as a welcome development for ordinary travellers. He mentioned that commuters were struggling and paying higher prices for travel since the private vehicles and buses had been affected by the suspension of services after the pandemic.
As the MP Santosh Pandey said, there were numerous times he presented this issue to the Union railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and in fact, it was raised during the zonal-level meeting of the railways in June. His constant request is finally answered, giving a sigh of relief to people. Pandey thanked the Railway Minister and other officials of the railway division for addressing the concerns of the people.
Railway authorities state that the operations of 13 MEMU and DEMU trains will be operational in different routes such as Gondia-Katangi, Raipur-Dongargarh, Raipur-Gevra Road, and Tumsar Road-Balaghat. Complete restoration of the services will be achieved on July 17.
The reinstatement of such trains will provide a more affordable transport mode, as well as curbing the reliance on privately owned transport. It will also be of great advantage to the students and working professionals who commute on a daily basis.
