On the second day of the third Test at Lord yesterday, India have fought their way back into the contest, courtesy of a fiery and inspired spell of quick bowling by Jasprit Bumrah. With the second new ball, the pace ace provided a spectacular showing and was in a scorching form and within two single overs, he disposed of three crucial Englishmen who were: Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Chris Woakes.
The lethal spell started by Bumrah with the plum scalp of the England skipper Ben Stokes, who had settled well at the crease along with Joe Root. The breakthrough gave India the upper hand. A few minutes later, Bumrah did so again, this time using a delivery that clean bowled a centurion, Joe Root. Root had finished his 37th Test hundred and had guided the English innings in a sober knock. But his hard work was abridged when the bowler caught his edge, and the ball came bouncing down onto his stumps and the middle one cartwheeled away not the least untidy end of what had been a stubborn patient perspicuous innings.
Bumrah was not finished yet. And on the next delivery spell, he bowled Chris Woakes on a golden duck to send the Lord on stunned silence. The two wickets on the two consecutive balls vaulted Bumrah to a hat-trick and had put India well back into the game.
In the interim, Mohammed Siraj would have found a place in the party but had it not been an expensive drop at second slip by KL Rahul. The field gartered an opportunity provided by this now-fit Jamie Smith and it could still cost them dearly.
The three-wicket haul by Bumrah in the next three deliveries shifted the game back to India after England seemed to be on course to a huge target. With the hosts still reeling after the morning session, India will now want to remove the tail as soon as possible and stake take-over of the match.
