A big respite to senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, the High Court on Tuesday disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) against him in the high-profile honey trap case. The libel in this case was a petition, based on the supposed statement by Kamal Nath that he had a CD as far as the scandal was concerned and was held to be deficient in substantive evidence.
Advocate Bhupendra Singh Kushwaha had filed the PIL based on media reports and a statement that had gone viral, saying that Kamal Nath had said, in an interview as reported by a news agency, that he too had the CD of a honey trap case. The petitioner wanted the authorities to take action against Kamal Nath, former minister Govind Singh, the police and the Special Investigation Team (SIT), he included all of them as parties to the case.
In the hearing that took place on Thursday, July 10, 2025, the High Court cast doubt with regard to the legitimacy of the allegations presented in the petition. The court sought particular evidence to back the claim that Kamal Nath had the CD in hand. The petitioners, however, could not avail themselves of any such CD or video footage in the court.
Although the lawyers of the petitioner suggested that a number of media channels and newspapers broadcast the statement of Kamal Nath, the court specified that only the allegations cited by the media were not acceptable in court to be valid. The bench moved against the absence of primary evidence and wondered why the video or CD under consideration was not even produced as a document or record.
The court, in its verdict, explicitly mentioned that the petition rested on uncorroborated news published in the press and did not present any material evidence that could be considered credible. Owing to this, the High Court dismissed the petition, which came as a great relief to Kamal Nath in a highly controversial case.
