New Delhi: World Population day, an annual event established originally by the United nation aims to raise awareness on the global population issues. This year, the theme for World Population Day 2025, “Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world,” underscores the critical importance of youth agency, reproductive rights, and gender equality in shaping our collective future.
The theme revolves around as the world grapples with the largest generation of young people in history. In 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, that every individual has the right to make informed choices about their lives and futures, especially concerning family size and timing. Empowering youth with accurate information, accessible healthcare, and genuine choice is paramount to addressing challenges like economic insecurity, gender inequality, and climate disruption.
For India, now the world’s most populous nation, World Population Day holds profound significance. With a significant portion of its population being young, the choices and opportunities available to Indian youth will directly impact the nation’s trajectory. While India has made commendable progress in stabilizing its overall population growth, with a national Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 2.0 (below the replacement level of 2.1), regional disparities persist. States like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh still exhibit higher fertility rates, while others, particularly in the south, face the challenges of an aging population.
The focus emphasizes the necessity of quality and all-encompassing strategies in India. It stresses the need for investing in quality education, strong healthcare systems (reproductive health care included) and generating plenty of employment opportunities for the growing youth population. Providing access to family planning facilities, encouraging male participation in family planning, and gender equality are essential measures to suggest.
Ultimately, World Population Day is a poignant reminder that population dynamics are not just about counts; they are inextricably linked to human rights, sustainable development, and the health of societies. For India, enabling its enormous young generation to make positive choices about their families and lives is not an aspiration, but a key plank for secure, equitable growth and a genuinely optimistic future.
