After some great anticipation, the third test match of the India versus England series is being played at the historic venue of the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, and both countries are expecting to gain an advantage in this five-game series, with it standing at 1-1 in the tally currently. England won the toss and captain Ben Stokes decided to bat first on a pitch likely to favour fast bowlers in the early hours.
The initial two matches of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy have ensured there will be an exciting series. England were dramatic in their maiden Test victory, chasing down a total of more than 370. Soon, however, India regained their composure in the second game at Edgbaston, when they produced a music-making victory by 336 runs, the first-ever Test win at this venue. Although Jasprit Bumrah was missing in the 2nd Test because of managing his workload, India’s young guns played magnificently. Shubman Gill made runs and scored 430 to be given the Player of the Match, and his batting was accompanied by bowlers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, as the latter combined to destroy the English batting with 17 wickets overall.
The third Test as a challenge to the Lord is new. The pitch will be fast and bouncy, and the last few matches in the venue seem to indicate that it’s going to be hard on the batters too. The mean score of the first innings of the recent few games is 309, which makes the initial overs important. As a matter of fact, the WTC final between South Africa and Australia, as shown here, has demonstrated how seamers can take control early.
England have only changed their playing XI by introducing Jofra Archer in lieu of Josh Tongue. This is Archer back in Test cricket in four years. India, however, will also welcome back the fast bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who is coming in place of Prasidh Krishna.
At the Lord, Indian performance has also not been very great, with 3 victories in 19 games.
