Death rate at Gujarat bridge collapse tragedy has soared to 15 as additional three bodies were recovered on Thursday. According to local authorities four people are still reported missing and rescue operations are ongoing. One part of Gambhira Bridge, linking Vadodara and Anand, collapsed into Mahisagar river on Wednesday leading to the tragedy.

Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya told the media he has confirmed the updated figures and the work is still under progress. The number of people killed is 15 and 3 additional bodies were retrieved today. There are four individuals unaccounted. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are carrying out the search operations even 4 km downstream, he said.

He further said that there have been two other vehicles stagnated in the mud at the scene of the accident, and the police need the assistance of the citizens to obtain additional information regarding the cars. Rescue efforts have also been complicated by continuous rainfall and increase in water levels in the river.

Vadodara Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohan Anand informed that a 10-15 meter slab on the bridge collapsed and several cars (two trucks, two pickup vans, and a rickshaw) plunged into the river. There are two additional cars left trapped on the fractured building.

Till now nine persons are rescued out of which five are shifted to SSG Hospital in Vadodara. Luckily, no one among those who have been rescued is mentioned to have been in a critical condition.

As a reaction to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared ex gratia payment of 2 lakh (From the Prime Ministers national relief fund (PMNRF) to the families of the deceased and 50,000 to the injured persons.
