NEW DELHI: Tomorrow, July 10, India will celebrate Guru Purnima, an auspicious occasion dedicated to revering and expressing gratitude to teachers, mentors, and spiritual guides. Observed on the full moon (Purnima) day of the Hindu month of Ashadha, this festival transcends religious boundaries, uniting Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains in a shared appreciation for knowledge and wisdom.

The term “Guru” itself holds profound meaning, derived from the Sanskrit roots “gu” (darkness) and “ru” (dispeller). Thus, a Guru is understood as one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and illuminates the path to enlightenment and knowledge. Guru Purnima emphasizes and promotes the core values of gratitude, reverence, wisdom, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge.

The significance of Guru Purnima is multifaceted. For Hindus, it is also known as Vyasa Purnima, commemorating the birth anniversary of the revered sage Veda Vyasa, who is credited with compiling the Vedas and authoring the Mahabharata. He is considered one of the greatest gurus in ancient Hindu traditions, symbolizing the sacred guru-shishya (teacher-student) relationship.

Buddhists observe this day in honor of Lord Buddha, who is believed to have delivered his first sermon at Sarnath on this full moon day after attaining enlightenment, thus setting in motion the Wheel of Dharma. For Jains, it marks the occasion when Mahavira gained his first follower.

Across India, the day is celebrated with various traditions. Disciples offer special prayers (puja) to their gurus, presenting offerings like fruits, flowers, and sweets. Spiritual discourses, satsangs (gatherings for spiritual discussion), and meditation sessions are common. Many also engage in acts of charity and service, embodying the teachings of their gurus. Students, in particular, visit their academic teachers to express their heartfelt thanks and seek blessings for their continued learning and growth.

Guru Purnima serves as a powerful reminder of the invaluable role teachers play in shaping individuals and society, fostering a culture of respect, devotion, and continuous learning.
