NEW DELHI: Over 25 crore workers across India are expected to participate in a massive nationwide shutdown, the “Bharat Bandh today,” called by a forum of 10 central trade unions. The strike, widely publicized as “Bharat Bandh on 9th July,” is a strong protest against the Centre’s alleged “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-national pro-corporate policies.” As the country observes this significant “today strike,” public services are bracing for widespread disruptions.

The unions have vociferously criticized the government, citing the ongoing unemployment crisis as a major failure that has “damaged the growth of the country.” Their demands include the scrapping of four new labour codes, which they argue weaken workers’ rights, extend working hours, and make it harder for unions to function. They also highlight the absence of the Indian Labour Conference for a decade and the government’s perceived inaction on a 17-point charter of demands submitted last year.

Sectors such as banking, insurance, postal services, coal mining, and state transport are expected to be significantly affected. While schools, colleges, and private offices are generally expected to remain open, commuters may face considerable inconvenience due to anticipated disruptions in public transport. Hospitals and emergency services, however, are slated to operate normally.

The “bandh today” also sees strong support from farmer organizations, including the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, who are protesting policies they believe have worsened rural distress, citing rising unemployment and inflation. This broad coalition underscores the widespread discontent among various sections of society. As India navigates this “strike today,” the government faces intensified pressure to address the grievances of millions of its workers and farmers.
