In Himachal Pradesh, rescue work is on full swing in the Mandi district after cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides hit the Thunag, Gohar and Karsog subdivisions last week, in which 30 people are still missing. Officials on Monday said that teams using drones and sniffer dogs have been brought to trace the missing people who are on difficult terrain and rubble.
The destruction passed on by heavy rains in the past 2 to 3 days has seen around 250 personnel of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Home Guards, and the local administration deputed in the ongoing operation. Moreover, there are 20 special teams that operate in isolated and inaccessible locations, which give out life-saving relief commodities such as relief kits, medics and others.
Till now, 1,538 ration kits have been distributed to the affected population, and immediate relief of 12.44 lakh has already been provided. The government is also providing more than 5 lakh per head to the worst-affected areas at Thunag and Janjheli to procure relief.
The extent of devastation is massive. As per the recent information, about 225 houses, seven shops, 243 cattle sheds, 31 vehicles, 14 bridges and many roads have also been damaged. At least 215 cattle were killed, and 494 people were rescued from the affected zones.
By Sunday evening, there were still 243 roads closed in the state, 183 of them in Mandi district alone. It has also affected 241 transformers in the electricity and 278 water supply schemes, leading to deterioration of basic services in some areas.
More light to moderate rain was accompanied in some areas of Himachal Pradesh, with 56 mm rainfall recorded in the Nangal Dam area. The weather department has also advised a yellow warning that suggests that there will be heavy rainfall in isolated areas till July 10.
The total estimated loss on account of the monsoon fury has exceeded 572 crore; however, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu indicated that the final number may touch 700 crore.
