New Delhi: In a significant legal victory for consumer goods giant Dabur, the Delhi High Court on Thursday barred Yoga guru Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved from publishing or broadcasting any advertisements deemed “disparaging” towards Dabur Chyawanprash. The interim relief, sought by Dabur, was granted by a bench led by Justice Mini Pushkarna, who succinctly stated, “Application is allowed.”

Dabur had initially approached the Delhi High Court in December 2024, seeking to restrain Patanjali Ayurved from running advertisements that allegedly belittled its popular Chyawanprash products. The case, reported by Bar and Bench, has been closely watched in the competitive fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector.

While Justice Pushkarna had initially considered referring the matter for mediation, Dabur’s legal counsel pressed for immediate orders against Patanjali, emphasizing the urgency of preventing further alleged reputational damage. The core of Dabur’s lawsuit revolves around an advertisement featuring Patanjali Ayurved founder Swami Ramdev. The suit contends that this advertisement falsely claims only Patanjali’s Chyawanprash is “authentic” and that other brands lack the traditional Ayurvedic knowledge essential for its proper preparation.

The court has issued a notice in the case and has scheduled the next hearing for the last week of January to further consider interim relief and proceed with the broader arguments. This ruling marks an important development in the ongoing legal battles between rival FMCG companies, particularly concerning comparative advertising and claims of product authenticity in the health and wellness market.
